VSBA Building Quality Handbook | Regional Victorian School Upgrades
Waveform Acoustics worked alongside a design team to upgrade a regional Victorian school as part of the State Governments $1.9 billion investment of State budget to build, expand, modernise and maintain schools across the state.
The team, including Waveform Acoustics, used the BQSH (Building Quality Standards Handbook) which sets the minimum quality criteria for all building projects, including new construction, refurbishment and maintenance works. This handbook is essential to delivering educational infrastructure that is:
- fit-for-purpose
- promotes health, engagement and wellbeing
- safe and inclusive
- designed to universal design principles
- empowers students and builds school pride
- encourage intellectual engagement and self-awareness.
Waveform Acoustics was specifically engaged by the architect tendering the proposed capital works to address noise intrusion, background noise levels and potential reverberation to proceed with the proposed upgrades.
We provided a full acoustic report to the architect with recommendations for noise mitigation set out allowing them to make informed choices when it comes to wall construction and materials, floor covers, ceiling construction and materials, door selection and window selection.
To reach these recommendations our team conducted a detailed review of all the acoustic elements of upgrades and elements across classrooms, offices and utilities to ensure that they meet the VSBA Building Quality Handbook. This involved reviewing the schematic designs for the building, the tender documents and finally the working drawings and specifications.
Waveform Acoustics was excited to partner on the proposed works for a regional P-12 school in the Mildura Rural City Council region. As a company we believe that effective acoustics play a crucial role in enriching the learning environment within classrooms and schools.
When sound quality is optimized, students find it easier to concentrate, grasp concepts, and participate actively in discussions. This enhancement not only boosts academic performance but also fosters a more positive attitude towards learning. Moreover, the benefits of good acoustics extend beyond students to teachers as well. In noisy classrooms, educators often struggle to project their voices, which can lead to vocal strain and long-term health issues. By improving classroom acoustics, we can support teachers' well-being and enhance their effectiveness in delivering lessons.
By applying the BQSH (Building Quality Standards Handbook) in the Regional Victorian School Upgrades we are ensuring that schools are being upgrade and created in a way that is conducive to learning atmospheres that benefits both students and educators alike.
